Can I use a cocktail shaker to muddle ingredients?
Yes! While many people muddle ingredients with a mortar and pestle, you can also muddle ingredients inside your cocktail shaker. This reduces the number of utensils and vessels needed to create your perfect cocktail.
Simply place your ingredients at the bottom of the shakers and use a wooden, plastic or steel muddler to smash and combine. Then, add your remaining cocktail ingredients to the shaker and shake as required.
What is the difference between a Boston shaker and a cobbler shaker?
A Boston shaker consists of two separate pieces: a large metal tin and a smaller mixing glass. The metal tin is usually made of stainless steel, and the mixing glass can be made of glass or plastic. Some Boston shakers also consist of two differently-sized metal tins. To use a Boston shaker, you place the smaller mixing glass inside the larger metal tin, ensuring a snug fit. This type of shaker requires a separate strainer, such as a Hawthorne strainer or a fine mesh strainer, to strain the drink when pouring.
A cobbler shaker is a self-contained three-piece shaker. It consists of three components: a metal base, a built-in strainer with small holes and a cap that fits over the strainer. The cap often includes a small lid or spout for pouring. This design eliminates the need for an additional strainer when pouring the drink.
Bartenders typically use Boston shakers because of their larger capacity. They’re also easier to assemble and disassemble for a fast clean, making them an excellent fit for busy bars, restaurants and dining rooms. Cobbler shakers are more popular for home use or casual drinks as they’re more convenient for one-off drinks.
No matter your style, we’ve got the perfect cocktail shaker for your venue. Whether you need large-size containers for the evening rush or an easy-to-use shaker for your favourite recipes, explore our range and choose the right fit for your drinks with Tomkin.
