What’s the difference between a Julep Strainer, a Mesh Strainer and a Hawthorn Strainer?
The Hawthorne strainer is the most common type of strainer found in professional bar settings. It has a flat, perforated piece of metal lined with a flexible spring, making it adaptable to different sizes and efficient in straining solids. However, it can be slightly difficult to clean and is easily damaged.
The Julep Strainer, the original cocktail strainer, has a bowl-shaped cup perforated with small holes and a long handle. Named after the Mint Julep cocktail, this strainer ensures you don't end up with a face full of ice. It's more durable and easier to clean compared to the Hawthorne Strainer, but it can be slower in straining.
Regardless of whether you use a Hawthorne or a Julep Strainer, sometimes you need a little extra help in filtering out smaller shards of ice, bits of fruit and other solids. That's where a fine mesh strainer comes in handy. It provides an additional layer of filtration, ensuring a smooth and refined cocktail.
Which shaker is right for my drinks — a Boston shaker or a Cobbler shaker?
A Boston Shaker consists of two parts: a stainless steel tin and a pint-size glass. It's loved for its larger volume, making it ideal for crafting multiple cocktails at once. However, it requires a separate strainer to filter out ice shards, pulp and pips from your cocktails. Here's a pro tip: most professional bartenders prefer to use weighted shaker tins because they reach the desired temperature quickly, reducing dilution and making the shaking process more efficient.
The Cobbler Shaker, also known as a 3-piece cocktail shaker, includes a base, built-in strainer and lid. Its built-in strainer is a convenient feature, especially for cocktail shaker beginners who don't want to buy extra equipment. Some cobbler shakers can be tricky to separate after use due to the seal created by the ice. Running them under warm water usually solves this issue.
While most professionals go for Boston Shakers due to their versatility and capacity, Cobbler Shakers are simple, easy to use and convenient.
