What is 18/10 stainless steel?
Not all stainless steel products are made the same. Stainless steel cutlery is made from a composite of metals that improve its durability, with 18/10 and 18/8 being the most common mixtures on the market. Stainless steel is also a poor heat conductor on its own, which means other alloys need to be added to the mix. So, what is 18/10 stainless steel?
18/10 refers to the percentage of chromium and nickel in each stainless steel product. For example, an 18/10 stainless steel knife contains 18% chromium and 10% nickel, with the rest of the metal being pure steel. Nickel and chromium are added to stainless steel during the creation process to reduce rust and enhance the steel’s shine, making it a common feature for restaurant and cafe cutlery.
Products containing a higher percentage of nickel are generally used for fine dining or upmarket restaurants, as nickel is added to give a stronger shine and extra rust resistance.
